Tech Giants and the U. S. Government: Reviving Nuclear Power
Three Mile Island, USASaturday, January 4, 2025
Nuclear power produces energy consistently, unlike wind and solar. It has a small physical footprint and no carbon emissions. A golf ball-sized fuel pebble can produce as much energy as burning four tons of coal. Google is buying energy from Kairos Power's small reactors for their AI systems.
The reactor company Kairos Power is creating jobs with high salaries. Their Hermes reactor project in Tennessee aims to be complete by 2027. The restart of the Three Mile Island Unit 1 plant is also happening, with Microsoft involved.
Critics fear nuclear disasters and waste management issues. However, experts point out that nuclear waste volume is small, and modern safety measures are robust. The Yucca Mountain repository in Nevada was planned but not realized. Current storage methods are temporary and considered safe.
