A Fight Over Health Monitoring Tech

A major dispute is unfolding between Apple and Masimo, a company specializing in health monitoring technology. Masimo accuses Apple of stealing their ideas and even hiring their employees to develop similar technology. At the heart of this conflict are patents, which grant exclusive rights to inventions.

The Smartwatch Controversy

Last year, Apple's Series 9 and Ultra 2 smartwatches were banned from import due to alleged use of Masimo's patented technology. Apple responded by removing the blood-oxygen feature to avoid the ban. However, in August, Apple reintroduced the feature with a new version that received approval from U.S. Customs.

Masimo, however, remains unhappy and is now suing U.S. Customs. Meanwhile, Apple is fighting the ban in court.

This isn't the only legal clash between the two companies. Masimo has also sued Apple in California, claiming that Apple owes them millions for using their patented technology.

A recent trial over trade secrets ended in a mistrial when the jury couldn't reach a verdict. Apple did win a small case against Masimo, but the damages were minimal.

The Complexity of Patent Disputes

This ongoing battle highlights the complexity of patent litigation. It's not just about who has the better technology, but who can prove they had the idea first. Both companies are digging in their heels, and the resolution is likely to take a considerable amount of time.
