Teen Actor Turns Bully Into Hero in 80s Sci‑Fi Flick

Tuesday, July 21, 2026
A young Robert Downey Jr. first appeared on screen in a 1985 comedy that mixed science and high‑school drama. In the film, two shy teens experiment with computers to create a perfect woman, who ends up looking like a glamorous version of Frankenstein’s monster. The story then follows the social dynamics at Shermer High, where a new character named Ian—played by Downey Jr. —cruelly spoils the nerds’ day by dumping slushies on them during a mall trip. This early role shows a side of the future Iron Man that many fans might not expect. The character Ian is rough and unkind, a contrast to the heroic persona Downey later adopted in the Marvel universe. Some observers think that playing such a mean role helped him learn how to portray more complex villains, like the powerful Doctor Doom in later films.
The movie gave the actor a chance to shine before he moved on to bigger projects. Even though Downey’s later work eclipsed this early gig, his former co‑star Robert Rusler remembers the experience fondly. Rusler said that Downey’s talent and humor made him a natural mentor, a relationship that continues to inspire Rusler today. After the film’s success, a television series based on the story ran for five seasons in the mid‑1990s. Downey did not return to the show, which makes sense as he had become a full‑time actor by then. While talk of a reboot has surfaced, the original star does not seem involved.
