As the leaves begin to change color in Teller County, Colorado, crews are working against the clock to complete several road projects before winter sets in. One of the biggest projects is the reconstruction of Lake Avenue, a major street that runs through the heart of Woodland Park. The project started in August, with crews removing the old pavement and leaving the dirt underneath. Residents along Lake Avenue have been dealing with dust and now face the possibility of mud as rain and snow are forecasted. The project includes new concrete gutters, curbs, sidewalks, and corner ramps that meet federal standards for accessibility.
Brice Reid, a business owner along Lake Avenue, has mixed feelings about the project. "If it needs to be done, it needs to be done," he said. "But it is a hassle. I just wish they could be more consistent with their work schedule."
In addition to Lake Avenue, crews are also working on Dewell Road and have plans to repave Pine Ridge Avenue in the spring. Further north, they are widening and repaving Highway 67 and repairing the paved Centennial Trail. These projects are expected to be finished soon, but the race against time continues as winter approaches.
