In a heated encounter, Chinese coast guard ships used water cannons and blocking tactics against Filipino fishermen near Sabina Shoal. This incident left three fishermen injured and two boats damaged. The Philippine coast guard reported that nearly two dozen fishing boats were targeted. A small Chinese vessel even cut the anchor lines of several Filipino boats, putting the crews at risk.

The Philippine coast guard urged China to follow international standards, prioritizing the safety of fishermen over aggressive enforcement. China's embassy in Manila did not respond to requests for comment. However, China's coast guard admitted to driving away Philippine vessels and taking "control measures." This admission was seen by the Philippine coast guard as an acknowledgment of wrongdoing.

Philippine coast guard spokesperson Jay Tarriela criticized China's actions, stating that they admitted to harming innocent Filipino fishermen. Despite repeated attempts by the Philippine coast guard to reach the injured fishermen, they were blocked. Eventually, they managed to provide medical attention and supplies.

Sabina Shoal: A Disputed Territory

Sabina Shoal, known as Xianbin Reef in China and Escoda Shoal in the Philippines, is within the Philippine exclusive economic zone. It is located about 150 km west of Palawan province. China claims almost the entire South China Sea, a vital waterway for global trade. This claim overlaps with the exclusive economic zones of several neighboring countries.

In 2016, an international tribunal ruled that China's extensive claims lack legal basis. However, China rejected this decision. The ongoing dispute highlights the complex geopolitical tensions in the region.
