Homs, Syria — Violence erupted in Syria's coastal cities following a deadly explosion at an Alawite mosque in Homs. The blast, which occurred during Friday prayers, resulted in eight fatalities and 18 injuries. Authorities suspect that explosive devices were placed inside the mosque, but no one has been arrested yet.

Attack Claimed by Little-Known Group

A little-known group, Saraya Ansar al-Sunna, took responsibility for the attack. They claimed it was aimed at Alawites, a minority sect within Shiite Islam. Hard-line Islamists view Alawites as apostates, adding fuel to the fire.

Protests and Counter-Protests

Protests and counter-protests broke out in Latakia and Tartous. Alawite demonstrators clashed with pro-government groups. Rocks were thrown, and at least one person was beaten. Security forces tried to intervene but struggled to control the chaos.

Sectarian Tensions Rise

The situation in Syria has been volatile since the fall of President Bashar Assad. Assad, who is Alawite, fled to Russia after a rebel offensive ended the 14-year civil war. Since then, sectarian violence has flared up sporadically, with Alawites often targeted.

Alawites Face Discrimination

During Assad's rule, Alawites held many government and military positions. Now, they face discrimination in public jobs and report arbitrary detentions of young men. The government has condemned the recent attack but has not made any arrests.
