The 2024 Presidential Election: A Coin-Flip in the Making
West Palm Beach, USAFriday, September 20, 2024
But what do the polls really mean? Pollsters and political scientists are quick to remind us that any survey has a margin of error and is susceptible to "noise" - numbers that shift because of the variables inherent in the polling process rather than because public opinion has actually changed.
In other words, the polls are telling us that the race is still a coin-flip, with numerous factors that could change the picture in the coming days. The campaigns are spending millions on TV advertising, and Trump's propensity to outperform his polls means that we can't count him out just yet.
One thing is clear, however: the abortion question is the strongest electoral card in the Democrats' hands. The New York Times/Siena College Poll showed Harris with a 13-point advantage among likely voters in terms of which candidate was trusted more on abortion. Immigration is also a key issue, with Trump holding a 12-point advantage in the same poll.
But the economy is perhaps the most crucial factor in the race. Trump was 13 points clear in the Times poll on the topic, which is often the top concern for voters. With the race hanging in the balance, it's anyone's guess who will come out on top.
