The Alters: Players Spot Hidden AI Traces in Game Content
Players of The Alters have expressed concerns after discovering evidence of AI-generated content within the game. This includes subtitles and text that appear to have been created using large language models (LLMs) without proper disclosure.
Valve's Rules and Lack of Disclosure
Valve's rules, updated in January 2024, mandate that game developers must disclose if they use AI for creating content such as art, code, or sound. However, The Alters has not made any such disclosure on its Steam page.
Evidence of AI-Generated Content
One player noticed a peculiar line in the game:
"Sure, here's a revised version focusing purely on scientific and astronomical data." This line appears to be a leftover AI prompt.
Another player, who played the game with Brazilian Portuguese subtitles, reported seeing strange translations. A screenshot showed a subtitle that read:
"Sure! The text translated to Brazilian Portuguese is: Every conversation two people can have, right? So we-"
Player Reactions
Some players are upset about the lack of transparency, arguing that knowing about AI-generated content is important for making informed decisions about what games to buy.
Others believe the issue is being blown out of proportion, pointing out that the AI prompt was found in tiny text on a background prop, which is not something players are expected to read.
Expert Opinions
Lucile Danilov, a game localisation specialist, expressed disappointment. She loves the game but feels the use of AI for translations is a "disgrace." She believes the mistakes could be due to a careless translator or someone on the development team using an LLM without proper oversight.
Handong Ryu, who translated the Korean version of the game, confirmed that the Korean localisation also shows signs of AI use. He finds it disheartening that the criticism comes from a part of the game he had no control over.
Developer Response
As of now, 11 Bit Studios has not publicly addressed these allegations. Earlier this week, Jurassic World Evolution 3 removed AI-generated content for scientists' portraits following player feedback.
Game Reception
Despite some uneven moments, The Alters has been praised for its unique storytelling and thought-provoking themes. The game has been well-received for its innovative approach.
