The Case of David Chou: A Church Shooting and Its Aftermath
Laguna Woods, USAWednesday, January 8, 2025
Henry Ang, a church member, recounted being hit by gunfire. Despite being legally blind, Ang helped another churchgoer escape. A witness described seeing a large man in black clothing with a mask who started shooting. Two individuals, husband and wife, were also struck and could not move.
Officers found Dr. Cheng’s body with multiple bullet wounds, alongside spent shell casings, bullets, and bags containing more loaded magazines and suspected incendiary devices. Chou reportedly asked for a Mandarin-speaking attorney, claiming he had left a letter in his car explaining his actions. The letter and other evidence indicate the shooting was motivated by Chou’s grievances with the Taiwanese community.
Chou, born in Taiwan during a period of high tension with China, immigrated to the U. S. after feeling unwelcome in Taiwan. Authorities suspect he targeted the Orange County congregation due to its concentration of Taiwanese members. The District Attorney’s Office must decide between life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty. Additionally, Chou faces numerous federal hate crime, weapon, and explosive charges with their potential penalties.
