As the iconic leather pants trend makes a comeback, experts are sounding the alarm about the potential risks to our health. Dr. Masarat Jilani, a doctor specializing in bladder care, warns that the sleek silhouette of leather pants can create a warm and moist environment that's perfect for bacteria to thrive. "Leather trousers might look good, but they do not allow air to circulate freely around your body, creating a warm and moist haven for bacteria in the very place you would rather stay fresh and clean," she explains. But what's the real danger? For women, who are already at an increased risk of fungal infections like thrush, the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) is particularly high. "Leather pants may also contribute to an increased risk of UTIs, particularly if you are already prone to them," Jilani says. And with 237,000 deaths related to UTIs recorded in the US in 2019 alone, it's a risk that shouldn't be taken lightly. So, why is leather pants so problematic? For one, many of the leather-look pants available aren't even made of real leather, but rather artificial materials like PVC or polyurethane. These materials trap heat and moisture against the body, making it even easier for bacteria to thrive. But what about those who still want to wear leather pants? Dr. Jilani advises opting for natural leather pants and wearing them for short periods only. "Wearing natural leather pants for a few hours at a time, especially in cooler weather, is generally fine if combined with natural underwear," she says. And when it comes to underwear, she recommends cotton or bamboo for maximum breathability. So, what's the takeaway? While leather pants might be stylish, they're not worth the risk to your health. By choosing breathable fabrics and taking steps to promote airflow, you can minimize the risk of infections and stay healthy.
