The Day NASA's Opportunity Rover Began Its Martian Adventure

Did you know that on January 25th, 2004, NASA's Opportunity rover touched down on Mars? The rover, which was expected to last only 90 days, ended up exploring the red planet for over 15 years! That's like driving a car across 28 miles of Martian surface. This wasn't the only event that happened on January 25th. The first Winter Olympics started in France in 1924. In 1945, an important World War II battle ended in Europe. Also, a city in Michigan became the first to add something called fluoride to its water supply.

President Kennedy had the first live TV news conference in 1961. In 1971, a famous person named Charles Manson was found guilty of some serious crimes. More recently, in 2021, a U. S. president allowed people who identify as transgender to serve in the military again. TheOpportunity rover's journey teaches us that sometimes things last much longer than expected.
