The Department of Education under Attack

The Trump administration hits gas on its goal to break down the US Department of Education. This big move has sparked lots of questions about future federal education programs and the money behind them. It's no secret that Trump wants to shrink the Department of Education. Trump appointed Linda McMahon as the Secretary of Education to lead the charge on reducing the department. Which is tasked with overseeing federal education laws, encouraging student success, and making sure everyone gets a fair shot at education. Trump even mentioned that his goal is to end the department in the future.

So where would the money go, if the department wouldn't exist anymore? Well, here's a simple breakdown: The Department of Education has a budget of $103 billion dollars for next year. About 2/3 of that, 67% to be more precise, goes to Federal Student Aid. If this gets carried out Jodi Spencer, Dean of the School of Education at UC Riverside, says their would be big questions about how to manage student financial aid. Bosses and researchers of the Education department gather and analyze data on the nation's education systems. They also help enforce anti-discrimination policies. California Attorney General Rob Bonta, promised that his office would take over and hold the schools accountable in the cause of discrimination of any student including transgender and gender nonconforming kids.
