The Disappearing Comet of Halloween

A comet that was eagerly awaited by skywatchers for its potential Halloween appearance has sadly disintegrated before the spooky celebration. This comet, called Atlas, was nicknamed the "Halloween comet" and observed by NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory. It went kaput as it got close to the sun, turning into small chunks.

Atlas, also known as C/2024 S1, was found in September with help from a telescope in Hawaii. Astronomers had kept a close eye on it as it moved toward the sun. They saw its end thanks to a joint space observatory run by NASA and the European Space Agency. This comet is part of a group that flies very close to the sun. It's not uncommon for comets like Atlas to break apart under the sun's intense heat and gravity. This event serves as a reminder of how challenging it is for comets to survive their sun-approaching journeys.
