The Great Condom Shift: How Teens Are Redefining Safe Sex
Friday, October 4, 2024
But it's not just medical advancements that are driving this trend. Controversy over sex education is also playing a significant role. With no federal standards in place, states are free to decide what they teach, and the results can be varied. In some states, condom demonstrations are banned, while in others, students observe them as early as middle school.
Young people are pushing back against these limitations, demanding comprehensive sex education that prepares them for healthy relationships. As Michelle Slaybaugh, policy and advocacy director for SIECUS, puts it: "We would never send a soldier into war without training or the resources they need to keep themselves safe... so why is it OK for us to send young people off to college without the information that they need to protect themselves?"
It's clear that teens are taking matters into their own hands, seeking out resources and support to make informed decisions about their sex lives. And while there's no one-size-fits-all solution, it's undeniable that this shift towards self-empowerment is a step in the right direction.
