The Gulf of America Officially lands on Google Maps

Google Maps is now showcasing a new name for a massive body of water. Anyone in the U. S. using Google Maps will see the name “Gulf of America", people in Mexico will see “Gulf of Mexico. ” The switch comes after a decision by the U. S. President Donald Trump to rename the area. Google previously mentioned that they change names when they get updates from official government sources. The reason for the change is not clear to regular folks like you and me. Alongside this alteration, Google was expected to update the name of the highest peak in the nation from Denali to Mount McKinley. However, Trump reneged on the order naming Mount McKinley. The president said the changes were to “honor American greatness. ” This is a bit confusing. Trump criticized Obama’s previous action of renaming McKinley to Denali as a “nod to the region’s native population. ” The alteration of the region’s name was a major move that was a big deal. The president said McKinley “championed tariffs” and was assassinated in an attack on our Nation’s values and our success.

The Federal Aviation Administration is also in the process of updating its data and charts to reflect these name changes. The U. S. Coast Guard has already started to incorporate the new “Gulf of America” name change into its public notices. The name changes may seem like a big deal. But remember, according to the Washington Post, Trump is a big fan of renaming things. He renames because he can. It's a land of the free. It is more important to understand that we live in a country where the government can change a name at a whim. But what does this mean for us?
