The Hidden Bond Between Fans and Their Favorite Stars

Parasocial Attachment: A Gap in Fan Research
Fans often feel a special connection to the people they see on TV, movies or social media. Researchers call this feeling a parasocial experience.
There are three parts to it:
- Interacting with the star – a one‑way conversation that feels personal.
- Forming a relationship – the fan starts to see the star as someone they “know.”
- Feeling attached – the emotional bond that can shape actions and attitudes.
The last part is called parasocial attachment.
A recent review examined studies from 2019 to 2024, following strict guidelines for reliability. Out of 59 studies:
- The majority focused on parasocial relationships, exploring how close fans think they are to the star and how much they act on that feeling.
- Only a handful studied parasocial interaction, and just one looked at attachment—highlighting that the strongest bond is still poorly understood.
Common themes across the research include:
- Fans feeling familiar with a star.
- Imagining a private, almost personal connection.
- Behaving as if they are close friends.
Researchers suggest that fans might use this bond to fill gaps in their own lives—a hypothesis that warrants deeper investigation.
The review calls for new research on:
- How attachment drives fan behavior.
- The emotional impact it has on individuals and communities.
