In 2021, a group of 95 older adults, aged 60 and above, took part in an online study. The participants were asked to complete various questionnaires and tasks. These included questions about their personal details and experiences during the pandemic, assessments of their psychological distress, satisfaction with life, and feelings of loneliness. Additionally, they underwent cognitive tests to measure their mental processing speed and accuracy.

The study found that certain factors were linked to better mental health among the participants. These included using positive coping strategies, being in the age groups of 65-69, 70-74, and over 75 compared to those aged 60-64, and having good to excellent health. On the other hand, those who relied more on avoidance-based coping and had average income levels reported poorer mental health.

Interestingly, the study did not find a strong connection between mental health and cognitive performance. However, it did reveal that older age, avoiding problems, and belonging to a religion other than Christianity or Catholicism were associated with slower and less accurate cognitive responses. This suggests that while mental health and cognitive function are related, they are not always directly linked. This is important to note because it highlights the need for tailored approaches when supporting the mental and cognitive health of older adults.

The findings of this study provide valuable insights for future public health initiatives.
