BERLIN, GermanyFriday, October 18, 2024
Biden stressed the value of alliances and democracy, highlighting the cost of living in a world where aggression is tolerated. He also welcomed the international loan package worth $50 billion, funded through interest on frozen Russian assets, aimed at supporting Ukraine through the winter.
German Chancellor Scholz underscored Germany's unwavering support for Ukraine while ensuring that NATO doesn't get directly involved in the conflict. He also expressed reservations about Ukraine's "victory plan" and refused to supply certain military equipment like Taurus long-range cruise missiles.
Biden's visit to Berlin was part of his tour to key allies, including Japan, South Korea, France, India, the UK, and Poland. He received Germany's highest honor, the Grand Cross special class of the Order of Merit, recognizing his support for the trans-Atlantic alliance.
The meeting also touched on other global issues, such as the conflict in the Middle East and the need for Israel to pursue peace after the recent developments. The gathering highlighted the critical role of allies and the importance of maintaining strong global relationships.
