The Last Stand of Minnesota's Old-Time Steakhouse

Remember when Minnesota's steakhouse scene was booming? One chain stood out: Timber Lodge Steakhouse. From its start in Burnsville in 1991, it grew to over 80 locations, serving up prime rib, ribeyes, and everything in between in a cozy cabin atmosphere. But times changed. Locations closed, including those in St. Cloud, Rochester, and even New York and Arizona. By 2008, with bankruptcy looming, there were just 18 left. Today, one lone lodge stands in Owatonna, a nostalgic reminder of its heyday.

What happened? Expansion was rapid, but problems piled up. Some spots found new life, like the Rochester location, now a Broadway Bar & Pizza. But the Bloomington restaurant closed in 2019, leaving just one Timber Lodge Steakhouse. It's still open, serving great food with a warm atmosphere. Nostalgia is a powerful thing.
