The Legacy of a True Statesman: Dan Evans' Life of Public Service

Dan Evans, a renowned three-term Republican governor of Washington state, passed away at the ripe age of 98. Throughout his impressive career, Evans demonstrated his commitment to public service, serving as a governor, US senator, and regent at the University of Washington. Despite his passing, Evans' legacy continues to inspire and shape the state he loved. Born in 1925 in Seattle, Evans' journey began as a civil engineer before entering politics. His early years in the state Legislature laid the foundation for his later success. In 1964, Evans won the governorship, defeating incumbent Democrat Albert D. Rosellini and prevailing in a challenging year for Republicans. As governor, Evans championed environmental causes, supporting clean air and water legislation, and created the nation's first state Department of Ecology. Evans' commitment to bipartisanship was evident throughout his career. He once said, "Accomplishing good things takes bipartisan effort, because often what we're trying to accomplish isn't partisan." He was an avid hiker and outdoorsman, often using his love of nature as a source of inspiration for his work. His sons, Dan Jr., Mark, and Bruce Evans, recalled his dedication to public service, saying, "Dad lived an exceptionally full life. Whether serving in public office, working to improve higher education, mentoring aspiring public servants... he just kept signing up for stuff right until the end. He touched a lot of lives. And he did this without sacrificing family."
