The club is famous for its roasts, where celebrities like Jack Benny and Eddie Cantor would joke around. Jack Benny once brought a pig onstage, saying it was there to eat the stuff thrown at him. Eddie Cantor's dressing room door had a sign that said “Jesus saves, ” and someone wrote under it, “But not like Eddie Cantor. ”

Milton Berle, known for his humor, once joked about his bad luck. Bob Hope had a witty reply. Comedian Jan Murray even made a joke about a foreign waiter. Shirley MacLaine had a clever comment about JFK’s love life. Jerry Lewis, of Martin & Lewis, used to joke too, but he had to turn down chairing a dinner because he was making a movie.
