The Love Story of a Rare Bird: Crested Ibis in the Wild

Once upon a time, there was a bird named the crested ibis. This bird loved wetlands, and it used to live throughout East Asia. But sadly, it was nearly gone from Korea, Russia, and Japan, with only China having a few left. Scientists in China found seven of these birds and started a special plan to help them. By 2019, they released 40 young birds into the wild for the first time. Among them, a boy born in 2016 and a girl born in 2017 tried to have babies on their own for the first time. We wanted to know more about where they live, how much space they use, and how they use their habitat.

Think about how much space a child needs to play and learn in a park. Similarly, birds like the crested ibis need a certain area to hunt for food, find a mate, and raise their babies. This area is called their home range. Understanding their home range helps us protect these rare birds better. It's not easy being a crested ibis in the wild. They need a healthy wetland environment to survive. Wetlands provide food, water, and a safe place for the birds. By studying the first naturally bred pair, we can learn a lot about how to help more crested ibis thrive in the wild.
