The latest Netflix series, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, has sparked a heated debate, with one of the brothers at the center of the infamous murder case, Erik Menendez, slamming the show for its portrayal of their lives. In a statement, Erik expressed frustration with what he called "Netflix's dishonest portrayal of the tragedies surrounding our crime." Ryan Murphy, the show's creator, responded with a rebuttal, defending the show's approach to telling the story. Murphy acknowledged that presenting different perspectives can be challenging, especially when dealing with a sensitive and complex case like the Menendez brothers'. He emphasized that the show is not meant to be a factual retelling of events but rather an exploration of the various theories and points of view surrounding the case. "It's a 'Rashomon' kind of approach," Murphy explained, "where there were four people involved in that. Two of them are dead. What about the parents? We had an obligation as storytellers to also try and put in their perspective based on our research, which we did."

The show's portrayal of the brothers' relationship has also drawn attention, with some critics suggesting that it may be hinting at an incestuous relationship between the two. Murphy countered that the show is simply presenting the theory proposed by Dominick Dunne, a journalist who wrote extensively about the case. "We are presenting his point of view," Murphy said, "and we had an obligation to show all of that and we did." Erik's statement criticized the show for its portrayal of the brothers and their lives, accusing Murphy of presenting a "horrible narrative through vile and appalling character portrayals of Lyle and of me and disheartening slander." Murphy, however, maintained that the show is not meant to be a biographical drama but rather an exploration of the complexities surrounding the case.
