The Mass Firing of Watchdogs: Trump's Change of Guard
Washington, USASunday, January 26, 2025
Some Congress members, like Senators Chuck Grassley and Lindsey Graham, had different reactions. Grassley wanted more explanation, while Graham suggested Trump should just follow the rules next time. Democrats and watchdog groups, however, worried this could make it easier for people to take advantage of the government.
Notably, the longtime Justice Department inspector general, Michael Horowitz, wasn't among those fired. Horowitz had looked into the FBI's investigation of Russian ties during Trump’s campaign, among other things.
Critics said these firings could lead to more waste and corruption in the government. They suggested Trump might use these vacant positions to put loyalists in place, which could affect services like Social Security and veteran benefits.
In the past, Trump has challenged the authority of these watchdogs, replacing several in 2020. Senator Elizabeth Warren called it a "purge" in the middle of the night, worrying it would dismantle checks on Trump's power.
