The Menendez Brothers: New Evidence, New Hope

The Menendez brothers, Lyle and Erik, might see a change in their prison sentences. A recent petition has surfaced, claiming new evidence that could lead to new sentences for the brothers. This petition includes a statement from a former member of the group Menudo, Roy Rosselló, who alleges that he was sexually assaulted by the brothers' father, José, in the 1980s. Additionally, a letter written by Erik to a cousin before the killings suggests he was a victim of abuse. The case is set to be reviewed in November 2024. District Attorney George Gascón has been supportive of the brothers' case, even filing a motion for clemency from Governor Gavin Newsom. Gascón believes that if the case reaches the parole board, the brothers have a strong chance of being granted parole. A lawyer representing one of the brothers hopes they could be home by Thanksgiving.

Gascón has since been replaced by former federal prosecutor Nathan Hochman, who plans to review the case files before making any decisions. Hochman wants to ensure a thorough review, speaking with relevant parties before taking a stance. A hearing for resentencing is scheduled for December 11. Both Lyle and Erik are currently serving their sentences at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in California. They were reunited in 2018 after initially being separated following their 1996 conviction. During their time apart, they maintained contact through chess games and letters, with Lyle noting that their shared experiences brought them closer despite the crime.
