The Mystery of Kapi: A Piece of the Early Gibbon Puzzle

Fossils of gibbons are quite rare, which makes their evolutionary history a bit of a mystery. One such fossil, Kapi ramnagarensis, was found in India and dated back to around 13 million years ago. Scientists initially thought it was an early gibbon due to a unique lower molar they found. However, some experts disagreed, suggesting it might be a different type of ancient ape that just looked similar. To settle this debate, researchers took a closer look at Kapi's teeth, using fancy statistical tools to compare them with both ancient and modern gibbons.

Guess what? The results showed that Kapi was indeed closely related to gibbons! Even though we only have one tooth, this discovery is exciting because it’s the earliest evidence we have of gibbons appearing in Asia during the Middle Miocene. Isn’t that cool?
