Octolasion tyrtaeum is a worm that has caused quite the stir in the scientific community. It all began with a description by Savigny back in 1826. He named it Enterion tyrtaeum. However, the type specimen, which is the original example of the species, went missing. This loss led to a lot of confusion and debate among scientists. Fast forward to more recent times, Ribaucourt added more details to the description. But even with this extra information, things didn't get clearer. Some scientists thought it might be the same as another worm, O. lacteum. Others disagreed. The results showed that O. lacteum and O. tyrtaeum are so similar genetically that they can't be told apart. This finding suggests that the name tyrtaeum might not be valid after all. So, what's the solution? Some scientists suggest that E. tyrtaeum should be treated as a Lumbricus species incertae sedis. This is a fancy way of saying that its exact place in the family tree of worms is uncertain. This approach acknowledges the confusion and leaves room for more research. This whole situation highlights the challenges of taxonomy, which is the science of naming and classifying species. It's not always straightforward, and sometimes, scientists have to deal with a lot of uncertainty. But that's okay.
