If you’re into handheld gaming, you’ve probably seen or heard about the Switch 2. At first glance, it looks like Nintendo took a page from other gaming brands like Lenovo. The new Switch has a darker, more serious look, which is a big change from their usual bright and fun designs. This isn’t the Nintendo we know and love, is it?
Sure, we all want a handheld that can handle big games like "Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom" without any speed bumps. But the Switch 2 feels like it’s trying too hard to fit in with the rest of the crowd. It’s got a bigger screen and more ports, but that’s about it. It’s the same basic design as the first Switch, just with some new greasepaint.
Remember the Switch 1? It was unique, and every other handheld PC brand copied it. Now, it feels like Nintendo is turning around and copying itself. Where’s the innovation? Where’s the fun, weird stuff that makes us love Nintendo?
Maybe they’re saving the crazier JoyCon colors for later. We can hope they’ll give us something special when they finally unveil it after their April 2 Nintendo Direct. After all, look back to the 3DS reveal in 2010—Nintendo remembered to make it colorful and fun.
We’ve seen a few teases: new JoyCons, better speakers, an extra USB-C port. But what about extra capabilities, like a mouse mode for FPS games? That could be cool. There are rumors about movement sensors, which could open up neat possibilities. But right now, Nintendo’s keeping mum about the details.
The Switch 2 just doesn’t have that certain Nintendo magic we’ve come to expect. This is a company that gave us the purple Gamecube and the strange, sometimes confusing WiiU. They can take risks! Why go safe now?
The Switch looked like a toy, and that was part of its charm. The bright colors made it clear it was for everyone. The Switch 2 is darker, more serious. It’s OK to play it safe, but little hints like color go a long way.
The worst part is the wait. Another four months before we find out more specs and launch titles. We’re dying to know if it’ll handle 4K games or bump up old Switch games to higher resolutions. Until then, we’re left with guesses and rumors and leaks.
So, for now, I’ll surround myself with action figures and bright lights to get in the gaming mood. I don’t need another black device to kickstart my gaming session. Here’s hoping Nintendo’s got some surprises up its sleeve!
