The Passion Returns: A New 4K Take and a Sequel Teaser

USASunday, July 5, 2026
The famous film that shows the last hours of Jesus is back in cinemas for a short run from September 10 to 17. It has been upgraded with sharper picture quality and richer sound so people can see it as if for the first time. During this window, moviegoers will also catch a preview of the next chapter in the story. The first part of the sequel is set to hit theaters on May 6, 2027, and a second part will follow in late May 2028. The original movie was a massive box‑office hit, earning more than $610 million worldwide from a modest budget. It also received Academy Award nods for its makeup, music and camera work. When it first premiered, the film stirred debate because of its intense scenes. It held the record for the biggest domestic R‑rated box‑office winner for two decades before being overtaken in 2024.
The director, who has been involved with the project for more than twenty years, says the new films will dive into spiritual themes and the struggle over humanity’s soul. He views them as a continuation of his life’s work rather than just another movie. Fans will notice that the role of Jesus in the new installments is played by a different actor, chosen because of practical issues like age and scheduling. The same change applies to the character of Mary Magdalene, who will be portrayed by a new actress. Tickets for the limited theatrical run are available from July 24, both online and at select theaters listed on the distributor’s website. The release also comes with a fresh trailer celebrating the film’s return.
