The Power of Bats: How Landscapes in Portugal Affect Pest Control

Researchers in Serra da Estrela, Portugal, tried to understand how landscape features affect bat predation of the pine processionary moth. They collected bat poop samples and analyzed them for moth remains. They also used a special technique called Lasso regression to see which landscape features were best for bat hunting.

Turns out, bats really like edges of rivers and dense tree cover. They also like to hunt in areas with mixed forests and nearby farms. The best distance for this kind of bat predation was within a 5km range. To make landscapes better for bat hunting, it's important to keep these features in mind. This means having diverse forests and protecting the edges of rivers. But, be careful not to break up the landscape too much, as this can make things worse for both bats and pests.
