The Power of Eucalyptus: Fighting Superbugs

Have you ever thought about how some plants could help fight tough bacteria? Scientists have been looking into this, and one plant that's showing promise is Eucalyptus camaldulensis. They tested its methanolic extract against some nasty bacteria like E. coli, Bacillus cereus, and Staphylococcus aureus. The extract was used at different concentrations and tested under various temperatures and pH levels. The results were pretty interesting! At 250 mg/mL, the extract did a great job against E. coli, with a 5. 6mm inhibition zone. B. cereus and Staph. aureus also showed significant inhibition at 200 mg/mL and 250 mg/mL, respectively. When the temperature was changed, the extract worked best against B. cereus at 80°C and Staph. aureus at 80°C. For B. subtilis, the best results were at 121°C.

pH also played a role. The extract worked best against B. cereus at pH 7 and against B. subtilis at pH 5. E. coli showed the most inhibition at pH 3. The scientists used a statistical method called one-way ANOVA to compare all these results. Their study showed that Eucalyptus camaldulensis could be a powerful tool in fighting antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This is a big deal because these superbugs are becoming a major health problem worldwide.
