The Power of Inclusion: Why DEI Matters in Higher Education
North Idaho, Coeur d'Alene,Saturday, September 28, 2024
The notion that DEI undermines competency is a misguided notion. Competency is not solely determined by individual merit; it is also influenced by historical and systemic factors. DEI initiatives help address these disparities, creating a more equitable environment where students can focus on developing their skills and knowledge.
In contrast to DEI, the alternative approach - often championed by those who dismiss DEI - prioritizes individual advantage and rewards those who have had more opportunities from the start. This perpetuates existing power dynamics, where those who have already had more advantages continue to hold sway over those who have faced fewer opportunities.
So, what can be done to support DEI in higher education? Firstly, it is essential to elect trustee candidates who understand the value of DEI and prioritize services that promote student success for all. By embracing DEI, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment that benefits everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances.
