The Power Struggle Behind Education Politics
USAThursday, March 13, 2025
The truth is that chronic absenteeism has nearly doubled nationwide from 2018 to 2022, largely due to COVID closures. As for graduation rates, the teachers' union approach is to raise them by lowering requirements and eliminating standardized tests. This does not actually improve education quality; it just makes it seem like more students are graduating.
Weingarten accuses the Trump administration of diverting billions of dollars from children. However, the plan is to divert money from the unions and their pet projects so that it actually goes to educating kids. Albert Shanker, the founder of the American Federation of Teachers, once said, "When schoolchildren start paying union dues, that's when I'll start representing the interests of schoolchildren. " This quote highlights the real priorities of the union.
Randi Weingarten's career has been more about union politics than actual teaching. She barely taught in a school long enough to call herself a "teacher. " It's clear that her concerns are not about the children but about her own power and influence. Parents across the nation are starting to see through her tactics, and it's a relief to watch her power diminish.
