The Social Security Data Showdown
USASaturday, May 3, 2025
Elon Musk has been vocal about his views on Social Security. He has described it as a "Ponzi scheme" and believes that reducing waste in the program is a key way to cut government spending. However, his critics argue that his approach could put the personal data of millions of Americans at risk. The lawsuit was filed by a group of labor unions and retirees. They are concerned about the potential misuse of personal data.
The appeals court's decision to keep the block on DOGE access was split along ideological lines. Conservative judges in the minority argued that there is no evidence of the team doing any "targeted snooping" or exposing personal information. However, the majority of the court agreed with the lower court's decision to restrict access.
The ruling from the U. S. District Judge in Maryland allowed staffers to access data that has been redacted or stripped of anything personally identifiable. This means that while the team can look at the data, they cannot see any information that could identify individuals. The administration's appeal is just one of many emergency applications to the Supreme Court as they face numerous lawsuits challenging various aspects of their agenda.
