The Spy Who Could Be Back
Los Angeles, CA, USAFriday, March 21, 2025
Bourne first hit the screens in 2002. That was with The Bourne Identity. The movie was a game-changer. It brought a new level of realism to spy films. No more high-tech gadgets. Just raw, gritty action. It was a hit, spawning two sequels based on Ludlum's books.
But the franchise didn't stop there. In 2012, Universal tried to extend it with The Bourne Legacy. Jeremy Renner played a different character, but it didn't stick. Then, in 2016, Matt Damon returned as Bourne. The movie earned a whopping $415 million globally. But since then, it's been radio silence.
The race for intellectual property is heating up. With fewer known properties available, everyone's eager to grab what they can. Amazon, for instance, recently took control of James Bond. Now, it's Bourne's turn in the spotlight.
Universal had plans to bring Bourne back. They even hired Conclave director Edward Berger to develop a new take. But it didn't happen fast enough. Now, the franchise is up for grabs, and the world is watching.
