The SR-71 Blackbird's Heat Shield Lessons for the SR-72 Darkstar

Ever heard of the SR-71 Blackbird? It could fly super fast, up to 2,000 miles per hour at an altitude of over 80,000 feet. That's faster than any jet plane ever! But something crazy happened when it flew so fast: it got hotter than a pizza oven on the outside. Like, 600 degrees Fahrenheit hot! This heat was caused by friction from flying so fast. So, the designers had to figure out clever ways to keep the plane from melting. They used special fuel that could handle extreme heat and a tough skin made of titanium. Titanium is super strong and can handle lots of heat. The plane also had special expansion joints to let the skin grow and shrink without breaking.

Now, Lockheed Martin is working on a new plane called the SR-72 Darkstar. It's supposed to fly even faster than the SR-71, maybe up to Mach 6. That's around 4,500 miles per hour! The SR-72 will probably use some of the same heat shielding tricks from the SR-71. But it's a secret project, so we won't know for sure until they tell us. It's amazing how the SR-71's design was so innovative that even today, more than 50 years later, engineers are still learning from it. As we keep pushing the limits of what planes can do, the old tricks of the Blackbird will still be important.
