In Magdeburg, Germany, a tragic event unfolded as a black BMW plowed into a bustling Christmas market, leaving five dead and hundreds injured. The man behind the wheel was identified as a 50-year-old Saudi psychiatrist, Taleb A, who had resided in Germany for nearly two decades. Authorities, though not officially naming him, confirmed his background and stated that he acted alone. Taleb, known for his anti-Islam views, was a former Muslim who shared critical tweets about the religion and its practices. His social media profile highlighted his support for the far-right, anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Taleb had also been an activist, helping Saudi women escape their country, but recently, his focus shifted to alleging that German authorities were unfairly targeting Saudi asylum-seekers. Peter Neumann, a prominent German terrorism expert, expressed surprise at Taleb's profile, noting it was unique in his 25 years of experience. "A 50-year-old Saudi ex-Muslim supporting the AfD and targeting Germany for its tolerance toward Islamists—that's a new one, " he said. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser confirmed that the attacker held Islamophobic views. "We can confirm that the perpetrator was evidently Islamophobic, " she stated. Atheist Refugee Relief, a German-based group, distanced themselves from Taleb, stating that he had made false accusations against them and their former board members. The group had initially planned to coordinate aid with him for atheist refugees from Saudi Arabia, but the cooperation failed. They filed a criminal complaint against him in 2019 due to his malicious attacks.
