The Unconventional Curriculum: SC Department of Education's Bold Move

The South Carolina Department of Education has recently partnered with PragerU, a conservative nonprofit, to bring their content to K-12 curriculum in schools. This move has sparked controversy among some education leaders, who are concerned about the potential bias and indoctrination in the videos. The PragerU videos tackle topics like history, civics, and financial literacy, but some critics argue that they can be seen as perpetuating a conservative worldview. According to Sherry East, President of the South Carolina Education Association, "It's not even a gray bias, it’s an in-your-face bias on some lessons of history." Paul Bowers from the SC ACLU added, "We have serious concerns about the religious content of PragerU’s videos, which often cross the line from information to indoctrination."

The videos, which are optional for teachers to use, have titles like "If there is no God—murder isn’t wrong" and "Do Not Misuse God's Name." Some critics are worried that these topics will not be thoroughly vetted and may not align with the state's standards. "Who vetted this material?" asked East. "Because I have talked to several social studies people this week about this and they are very upset and concerned that someone thinks that this is how should teach history in South Carolina." In a statement, Superintendent Ellen Weaver said, "These optional educational materials, aligned with South Carolina’s K-12 standards, will provide a wide range of essential topics like civics and financial literacy." However, some educators are concerned about the potential impact of PragerU's content on their students.
