The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, a union known for its strong stance on labor rights, made headlines by announcing it wouldn't be endorsing any presidential candidate in the upcoming election. This decision was met with surprise, as many major labor unions had already backed Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris. However, several joint councils and local unions within the Teamsters organization have since pledged their support for Harris. The union's decision was a result of member polling and roundtable interviews with all major presidential candidates. Despite reviewing six months of data, the team found few commitments on core issues from either Trump or Harris. The union's General Executive Board announced its decision, citing a lack of support among members for either party's nominee. Interestingly, a recent poll conducted by the Teamsters showed nearly 60% of its membership supported Trump, while 31% backed Harris. Trump seized the opportunity to boast about the numbers at a campaign rally, but local unions have refused to back down. The Long Island chapter and several others have publicly endorsed Harris, citing her commitment to labor rights and her administration's efforts to save the pensions of over a million retirees.

One local union, Joint Council 39 in Wisconsin, praised Harris's efforts to protect workers' rights. Bill Carroll, the union's president, emphasized that Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, had consistently demonstrated their dedication to championing the labor movement. Another union, Joint Council 43 in Michigan, echoed these sentiments, highlighting Harris and Walz's commitment to safeguarding social security and ensuring access to quality healthcare. The joint councils' decisions were met with enthusiasm from Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), who shared the endorsements on social media. Cortez Masto emphasized that the Nevada Teamsters knew Harris was a fighter for union workers and that together, they would win the race. In a surprising twist, Teamsters President Sean O'Brien sparked an internal rebellion by speaking at the Republican National Convention in August. He had also requested to speak at the Democratic National Convention but was rejected. Instead, the Democratic National Committee invited rank-and-file Teamsters whose pensions were saved by the Biden-Harris administration to speak.
