The Unconventional Path
Nevada, USAThursday, September 19, 2024
One local union, Joint Council 39 in Wisconsin, praised Harris's efforts to protect workers' rights. Bill Carroll, the union's president, emphasized that Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, had consistently demonstrated their dedication to championing the labor movement. Another union, Joint Council 43 in Michigan, echoed these sentiments, highlighting Harris and Walz's commitment to safeguarding social security and ensuring access to quality healthcare.
The joint councils' decisions were met with enthusiasm from Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), who shared the endorsements on social media. Cortez Masto emphasized that the Nevada Teamsters knew Harris was a fighter for union workers and that together, they would win the race.
In a surprising twist, Teamsters President Sean O'Brien sparked an internal rebellion by speaking at the Republican National Convention in August. He had also requested to speak at the Democratic National Convention but was rejected. Instead, the Democratic National Committee invited rank-and-file Teamsters whose pensions were saved by the Biden-Harris administration to speak.
