The Unexpected Flooding in North Carolina's Mountains
Asheville, NC, USA,Monday, October 7, 2024
Asheville and its neighbors had already been drenched by a heavy rainstorm when Hurricane Helene’s remnants crashed into the Blue Ridge Mountains. This phenomenon is called the upslope effect, where clouds rise over mountains and dump a massive amount of rain all at once. It’s like trying to pour water through a funnel – everything gets pushed down quickly, leading to extreme flash flooding.
Communities in western North Carolina were devastated. Houses were washed away, highways vanished, and towns were cut off from the world. All this happened because of a “safe” area getting hit by an unexpected amount of rain in just four days – enough for half a year! Experts warn that events like these will only become more common as climate change continues to wreak havoc on our weather patterns.
