In the heart of Congo's gold mining town, Kamituga, a once-thriving community is now ravaged by the unseen epidemic of mpox. The town, home to over 300,000 people, has become the epicenter of the world's latest outbreak, with more than 6,000 suspected cases and over 1,000 new infections reported daily. The virus, which causes mild symptoms in most cases, has taken a devastating toll on the town, claiming eight lives, half of them children.
For Divine Wisoba, the loss of her 1-month-old daughter, Maombi, is a constant reminder of the virus's devastating impact. "When she was born, it was as if God had answered our prayers — we wanted a girl," Wisoba said, her voice trembling with grief. "But our biggest joy was transformed into devastation."
The situation in Kamituga is dire. The town's general hospital is regularly near capacity, with a daily average of five new cases reported. The lack of funds, vaccines, and information has made it difficult to stem the spread of the virus. Locals say they are not aware of the risks associated with mpox, and many are unaware of how to protect themselves.
The World Health Organization has labeled the outbreak a global health emergency, but the reality on the ground is far from reassuring. Aid groups like ALIMA are struggling to reach rural areas, and the government's budget for mpox response is severely inadequate.
