In 1943, Knoxville was desperate for more hospital beds. That's when the idea for a Baptist Hospital came up. The plan was to build a 200-bed hospital for around $1 million. The hospital finally opened in 1948, bringing much-needed medical care to East Tennessee. It became a major employer, with over 2, 000 jobs at its peak. But the money problems never really went away. In 2008, Baptist Hospital merged with another health system to form Mercy Health Partners. The plan was to build a new hospital downtown, but that didn't happen due to the tough economy. The old Baptist Hospital started to close its doors, with only a few buildings still standing today.
