Thousands March in D. C. Before Trump's Inauguration

Just days before Donald Trump was set to take office again, thousands of people from across the U. S. gathered in Washington, D. C. to march for women's reproductive rights and other causes they feel are threatened by the incoming administration. This wasn't the first time such a march had happened; eight years ago, a similar event took place when Trump first took office. Marchers wanted to show their support for issues like abortion access, transgender rights, and climate change. The march was one of many protests, rallies, and vigils planned for the days leading up to Trump's swearing-in. In fact, over 350 similar events were happening all over the country. Jill Parrish from Texas initially planned to attend the inauguration of Vice President Kamala Harris but changed her trip to join the protest instead. She wanted the world to know that half of U. S. voters didn't support Trump.

Demonstrators gathered in different parts of Washington before marching to the Lincoln Memorial. They held signs with slogans like "Save America, " "Against abortions? Then don’t have one, " and "Hate won’t win. " There were moments of tension when a Trump supporter joined the march, but police intervened peacefully. Rick Glatz from New Hampshire marched for his four granddaughters, saying, "I’m a grandpa. And that’s why I’m marching. " Anna Bergman, a high school teacher from Minnesota, wore her original pink pussy hat from the 2017 Women’s March. She wanted to be surrounded by like-minded people on this day. The march, now called the People’s March, aimed to broaden support and included themes like feminism, racial justice, and anti-militarization. Organizers hoped to convert marchers into long-term activists in their communities.
