TikTok in Hot Water: States Allege App Harms Kids' Health

Hey there, TikTok is in some serious trouble! Fourteen top law enforcers, known as attorneys general, have just sued the app. They say it’s not as safe as it claims to be, especially for kids. Some kids have even gotten hurt or worse, doing dangerous things to join in on the site’s popular “challenges.” These attorneys general aren’t just talking about one incident. They say TikTok has features that make people spend too much time on it, like notifications that mess with kids' sleep and videos that play automatically. Plus, you can’t even turn off the autoplay! Here’s another thing: TikTok is owned by a company in China called ByteDance. There’s a law that might make TikTok sell its business in the U.S. or even get banned. TikTok says this law is unfair and shouldn’t be used.

And that’s not all! There are also concerns about how TikTok handles kids’ private information. Lots of states and groups that help kids are raising these issues. In these lawsuits, the attorneys general point out that TikTok’s challenges can be really harmful. Some kids have even died doing dangerous stunts to get more likes and followers. One sad example is a 15-year-old boy who died doing something called “subway surfing,” where kids ride on top of moving trains. His mom found TikTok videos about it after he passed away. TikTok hasn’t said anything about these lawsuits yet. The attorneys general who are suing come from all over the U.S., including California, Illinois, and New York. Each one filed a lawsuit in their own state.
