TikTok's Tough Road with the US Government
USATuesday, February 4, 2025
The idea of a government fund isn't new. Other countries, like Norway and Saudi Arabia, have these funds. They invest in all sorts of things, like stocks and real estate. So, the idea isn't crazy. It's just a matter of how it's done.
TikTok is under a lot of pressure to find a new owner by early 2023. That's not a lot of time to figure out a deal, especially one as complicated as this. It's a big challenge, but it's not impossible. The US government wants ByteDance to have less than 20% ownership. ByteDance doesn't want to give up control of the app's algorithm. This could be a big roadblock in any deal.
But what if the US government takes over TikTok? A lot of questions and challenges come with that. It's a creative solution to a tricky problem. But is it a good idea? It's hard to say. Only time will tell if it's a viable option. Meanwhile, TikTok users and advertisers are left wondering what the future holds for their favorite app. TikTok needs to do something fast if it wants to stay in the US.
