Top NYPD Officer Quits Amid Sexual Misconduct Claims
New York City, USASunday, December 22, 2024
Maddrey has been with the NYPD since 1991 and rose to his current position over the years. His tenure has been marked by challenges, including interference with a 2021 arrest, for which he was recommended to face punishment. Although former Commissioner Keechant Sewell agreed, her successor, Edward Caban, dismissed the case.
In the past, Maddrey has faced similar accusations of sexual harassment and gender discrimination, which he has denied. The situation is being closely monitored by Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Tisch. A department-wide review will ensure no high-ranking officers misuse their power.
On Saturday, Tisch appointed John Chell as the acting chief of department. Chell, who was most recently the chief of patrol, will oversee the NYPD's crime-fighting strategies and quality of life initiatives. Chief of Transportation Philip Rivera will take over Chell's previous role, focusing on the safety of roads, bridges, and highways across the city.
The sudden resignation and the allegations raise questions about the NYPD's internal culture and the handling of power by high-ranking officers.
