USAMonday, May 19, 2025
In Missouri, seven people died due to the storms, with five fatalities in St. Louis County and two in Scott County. Central Missouri is bracing for another round of severe thunderstorms. The storm system also affected Virginia, where two people were killed by falling trees. The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts a brief respite from the storms, with severe weather risks returning soon. The NWS also issued an enhanced risk for severe weather in central Kansas and Oklahoma.
The storms caused significant damage to infrastructure. In St. Louis, an estimated 5, 000 buildings were affected, and over 60 patients were treated at local hospitals. The power outages were widespread, with tens of thousands of customers in Missouri and Kentucky left without electricity. The cleanup efforts are underway, but the recovery process will be long and challenging.
The federal government has offered support to the affected states. The Homeland Security Secretary spoke with the governors of Missouri, Kentucky, and Illinois, pledging federal resources and assistance. The NWS reported 28 tornadoes on Friday, highlighting the severity of the storm system. The coming days will be crucial as communities work to rebuild and recover from the devastating impact of the storms.
