Tornadoes Terrorize St. Lucie County: A Storm's Surprising Wrath
Fort Pierce, Florida, USAFriday, October 11, 2024
Across Florida, the number of tornado reports surged to 38, with over 125 warnings issued by the National Weather Service. This shattered the previous record set during Hurricane Irma. Officials were stunned, admitting they couldn't have predicted such devastating activity. Now, St. Lucie County faces significant damage, including downed power lines and uprooted trees. As of early Thursday, more than 64,000 residents were without power, and rescue efforts continued.
Laura Gabriel, a storage facility manager, was among those worried about her elderly customers. She wanted to ensure they could access their supplies amidst the chaos. The storm was so powerful that it left behind a trail of destroyed homes and overturned cars. Gabriel summed up the feeling of many residents: "We knew it was going to eat up everything it came across."
