Tragedy on Sapelo Island: Ferry Dock Collapse Claims Lives

Imagine celebrating a community event on a small, beautiful island. Suddenly, disaster struck Sapelo Island, Georgia, when a ferry dock collapsed. The accident happened during an annual festival honoring the island's Gullah-Geechee community, descendants of Black slaves. Just before 4 p. m. , a gangway on the visitor ferry dock broke apart, plunging around 20 people into the water. Among them, seven lost their lives, and six were critically injured, needing urgent medical attention. Two of the injured were even flown by air ambulance to hospitals. Reports first suggested a boat collision, but officials from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) later clarified that no collision occurred. The cause of the collapse remains unknown. The incident had a profound impact on the local community. Even the chaplain for the DNR was among the fatalities. Many families were affected, and emergency services had to set up a family reunion point at a local church.

Multiple agencies, including the McIntosh County Sheriff’s Office and the US Coast Guard, jumped into action. They used boats with side-scan sonar and helicopters for search and rescue missions. The DNR assured everyone that the gangway had been secured, and the incident is under investigation. President Joe Biden and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp both expressed their heartfelt condolences. The community of Darien shared similar sentiments, stating the accident turned their day of celebration into a tragedy. Sapelo Island is a unique barrier island only accessible by boat. Despite its small size and population of around 70 residents, it has a rich history and cultural significance. The island previously suffered significant damage from Hurricane Helene, causing a six-day power outage.
