Tragedy Strikes Colorado Mine Tour: Guide Loses Life

Imagine descending deep into a gold mine, 500 feet below the surface, only to encounter a sudden elevator malfunction. This is exactly what happened during a tour at the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine in Colorado. Patrick Weier, a 46-year-old tour guide from the nearby town of Victor, lost his life in the accident. Patrick was leading a group of 12 adults when the elevator experienced a mechanical failure. The elevator managed to bring the passengers back to the surface within 20 minutes, but the door was found broken. Four people suffered minor injuries, and the group had to wait underground for about six hours. Rhonda Pulse, one of the visitors, recalled the group's calmness during the wait. "We were uncomfortable, but we never panicked," she said, praising the Teller County Sheriff's Department for their handling of the situation.

The mine has been closed for investigation. Local, state, and federal authorities, including the US Mine Safety and Health Administration and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, are examining the incident. Despite passing previous safety tests, this tragic event raises questions about the mine's safety measures. Patrick leaves behind a 7-year-old son. The Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine expressed condolences to Patrick's family and thanked emergency personnel. The mine will remain closed until further notice.
